Google Translate vs. Learning Italian

Why take the time and effort to learn Italian, or any language, when we have portable computers in our pockets that can translate for us in seconds?

Here are just a few that come to mind right away, and no, I didn’t ask ChatGPT for help:

1. Practicality. There will be times in Italy when you need to think on your feet and respond. For example, while checking out at a store, the cashier will ask you simple questions, and it’s no place to whip out your phone for help.

2. Accuracy. Italian has a lot of homographs (words that are spelled and pronounced the same but have different meanings). Piano in Italian can mean slow, floor, shelf, flat, quiet and piano the instrument. Even within context, you’ll never be certain that Google picked the right meaning.

3. Connection. Looking someone in the eye and searching to speak their language is polite and forms a bond, no matter how brief, between you and the Italian you’re speaking with. Pointing at translated words on your phone screen is the opposite.

4. Culture. It is long known that language is the carrier of culture. Knowing the names of foods, art terminology and household objects can help you see the world through an Italian lens.

5. Personal achievement. With all the random googling and the apps we use to stay informed and organized, isn’t it nice to have knowledge that you earned, own, and can put to use?
