Bread and Italian

Ciao amici,

 

Buona primavera! Happy Spring! The days are longer and the temperatures a bit warmer, and I spotted a few clusters of daffodils in the park this week. I’m excited to for the dreary dregs of winter to be over!

 

Last Friday, I taught a class at Astor Center called “Vino e Pane: Italian Wine at the Bakery” where I lead a classroom full of students through a tasting of wines from Central Italy paired with pizzas and breads from Grandaisy Bakery.

 

It was a gluttonous evening of fun and high energy as I shared my passions for Italian language, wine and carbs. The language aspect of the class was that I named each food and wine pairing with an Italian expression about bread. It was a fun tidbit of the class that I want to pass along to you!

 

Here they are:

Essere pane e cacio “to be like bread and cheese” meaning to get along well.

 

Un tozzo di pane “a crust of bread” something that sells easily and inexpensively.

 

Vendere come il pane “to sell like bread” like our saying “to sell like hotcakes”.

 

Essere buono come il pane “to be good as bread” meaning to have a heart of gold.

 

Non è il mio pane “It’s not my bread” meaning it’s not for me, I don’t like it.

 

Se non è zuppa e pan bagnato “if it’s not soup, it’s wet bread” is a saying for when there are only a few similar options.

 

Pane al pane e vino al vino “bread as bread and wine as wine” meaning to say things as they are, to be straightforward.

Italian expressions are fun to learn and are great example of how Italian culture reflects itself through language.
