Ciao Amici,
Visiting a cemetery in Italy isn’t typically on the vacation itinerary – but consider it for your next trip! Italian cemeteries are free, open-air museums that reflect local history and culture. The sculptures, architecture and centuries of tombs are just as breathtaking and informational as any landmark tourist site.
Here are a few suggestions for cemeteries to visit:
Venice: San Michele Cemetery The cemetery is on two separate Venetian islands and you have to take a ferry or gondola to get there. It's a multi-confessional cemetery, so you can see burial site traditions for several different religions.
Rome: Verano Cemetery This is Italy’s biggest cemetery where you can see centuries of various sculptural styles: Neoclassic, realistic, eclectic, symbolic, Liberty and Futurism as well as the gravesites of notable Italian historic figures.
Capri: Cimitero Acattolico Among the lemon and palm trees of this Mediterranean island is a cemetery dating back to the mid-1800s when Capri was hit with a disastrous tuberculosis endemic. Strolling through the rows of gravestones, you can read the poetic epitaphs of Italian, French and English artists and poets.
While Halloween is gaining popularity in Italy, the true Italian holiday of the season is Il Giorno di Ognisssanti (or Tutti Santi) where flowers are left at the tombs of deceased loved ones.
Enjoy the lovely fall weather and spooky season! Ready to learn more about Italy? Let's schedule an educational event about any Italian city, region, cuisine or wine!
Un abbraccio, Lisa |
