Retracing Steps in Sicily

Ciao amici,

In just over two weeks I’ll be heading back to Italy! I plan to make my usual stops in Florence and Rome, but I booked a few extra days on my trip so I can spend some time in Sicily.

Like so many others, I have a special connection with Sicily. While I was an undergrad in Rome, I went to Siracusa for a summer to study Sicilian literature and culture. I visited ancient archeological sites, jumped into the Mediterranean during breaks between classes and made life-long friendships.

It wasn’t all fun and games though – I worked late in a bar, July days were miserably hot and some fellow American students accused me of conspiring with the locals to rob their apartment.

I haven’t been back to Sicily in years. I’m curious to see how the island has changed and the impact of the “White Lous effect” that has brought hoards of tourists to Sicily over the past couple years.

I know is that Mt. Etna hasn’t changed, hopefully I will see the friendly volcano let off a little steam and a few streams of lava.

Are you planning a trip to Sicily? As a fair warning, not as many people speak English there like they do in the large cities. Signing up for my Italian Beginner's Boot Camp will prep you will the foundations Italian to help you throughout your trip!

Abbracci,

Lisa
