A Festive Vegetable: Romanesco Broccoli

Ciao amici, Buone feste! I hope everyone is staying warm and preparing some of your favorite meals on this Christmas Eve.
While I can’t quite fit in a feast of seven fishes for my household of three (cat included), I am nonetheless planning an abundant fish dinner featuring my favorite traditional holiday dishes of Rome.
The showstopper will be Brodo di arzilla, a soup made with skate and Romanesco broccoli. I thought the skate would be the challenging ingredient to find, but I ended up biking up and down Manhattan yesterday in 26°F in search of the Romanesco broccoli– I found it!
Too bad it’s not more available on our side of the Atlantic because it’s such a delicious and fascinating vegetable. Romanesco has similar flavors as regular broccoli, but with a creamier texture, like cauliflower and with a tinge of unique bitterness.
Another super nerdy fact is that it is also called “Fractural broccoli” because of the way the spiral patterns match with Fibonacci numbers. As a Girl Math person, I wish I could point it to you in person.
What are you cooking up this season? I would love to hear all about it! If you want to see more about Brodo di arzilla and Broccoli Romanesco – be sure to follow me at @immerseitaly on Instagram and Facebook.
Enjoy the holidays and I hope to see you in class in 2025!
Auguri! Lisa |
